Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey, Summary Results, Australia, 2006 |
|
The Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALLS) was conducted in Australia as part of an international study coordinated by Statistics Canada and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The ALLS is designed to identify and measure literacy which can be linked to the social and economic characteristics of people both across and within countries. The ALLS in Australia was jointly funded by the Department of Education, Employment and and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ALLS measured the literacy of a sample of people aged 15 to 74 years.
ABS released a publication presenting information from the 2006 ALLS. The results from ALLS will assist in answering questions of whether Australians' literacy skills are adequate for the challenges they face in work and daily life. The ALLS provides information on knowledge and skills of 15 to 74 year olds in the following four domains: prose literacy, document literacy, numeracy and problem solving. A fifth domain measuring health literacy proficiency was produced as a by-product of the above domains.
