Professional skills development


This Adult Literacy National Project Innovative Project by the Victoria University developed two resources to support the implementation of Employability Skills in Further Education courses:

  • a professional development resource for teachers of language, literacy and numeracy programs to support the identification of Employability Skills in their programs and teach their learners to make the links between their learning and these skills. The resource also supports VET practitioners understand the cultural implications of the specific facets identified as part of each Employability Skill.  It can be found at http://tls.vu.edu.au/employability_skills/index.html.  
  • a learner guide to support learners in language, literacy and numeracy programs understand and apply Employability Skills.  It can be found at http://tls.vu.edu.au/employability_skills/l_guide/index.htm

This flexible resource kit guides teachers through the process of developing student's skills to create digital stories about their local communities. Activities develop students' oral and written communication skills, Infromation and Communication Technologies (ICT) skills, project planning skills and employability skills. It has been developed to suit the diverse needs of students in a range of locations and educational settings.

The ten session plans in the kit are accompanied by printable tasks and handouts for students. Teachers with varying ICT skills will find useful information and training tips. There are also tips for teachers about setting up projects and maximising the development of the students' skills as they engage with the activities in the resource kit. The kit includes sample digital stories and copyright-free photos and music.

The WELL professional development guide for trainers and assessors was developed focussing on methods and processes for analysing language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) requirements of learners. The objective of the guide is to raise awareness and provide information, case studies and tools to enhance knowledge and understanding of the range of LLN issues and support needs of learners in the Construction and Property Services Industries. 

The guide also covers the responsibilities for Registered Training Organisations and other providers to provide appropriate LLN support to learners under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).

Into Learning-a professional development resource for teachers of pre-literacy/low literacy adult ESL students. The DVD presents 5 classroom sequences which can form the basis of a 1-2 hour PD session. Each sequence demonstrates a single language recycling activity for trainers to extent their knowledge and repetoire of strategies and reflect on their own methodology and practice.

Report Writing in Corrections is an innovative training resource designed to assist workers in the corrections industry with the development of report writing skills. The resource contributes to the development and advancement of clear and appropriate written communication required to report on clients with demanding behaviour and needs, in a statutory environment. The target audience is staff in Corrections and other allied industries who work with difficult and demanding clients.

This suite of resources is designed to support the Asset Security Training Package (PRSO3). It is aimed at assisting the development of workplace communication skills for security operatives at the Certificate II level. The materials cover core units of competency from the Certificate II in Security Operations (PRS20103) qualification. The target audience is Registered Training Organisations and their constituent candidates undertaking training for the Certificate II in Security Operations. Creative Training  PDF Document  (3.2 MB) is for trainers in the arts and cultural industry who, in the process of delivering vocational training, also need to support the development of a young person's literacy (including workplace communication) and numeracy skills. This resource may help a trainer to be prepared for those trainees who are attracted to arts/cultural industry training because they perceive it to be very hands-on and practical.  Some of those trainees may not be prepared for the literacy and numeracy demands of the training. The resource contains suggested approaches to developing trainee's literacy and numeracy skills and sample activities using these approaches.  It also shows trainers how to identify the Literacy, Language and Numeracy demands of a unit of competency.  The resource can be used for all training packages in the arts and cultural industries.

The resource provides guidelines and practical strategies in relation to language, literacy and numeracy for national toolbox developers. The resource includes a booklet for Toolbox developers and a PowerPoint presentation.

The Certificates in General Education for Adults (CGEA) website provides teachers with a one-stop shop for the CGEA. It provides information about the curriculum, assessment, delivery strategies, moderation and teaching resources; online moderation, and database of CGEA resources; and teaching strategies which can be downloaded and printed off for use by students.

The 'Pre-training Assessment Kit' is designed to support Trainers and Assessors to develop their skills in carrying out the Skills Gap Analysis. Furthermore, it supports the development of individual training plans with some suggestions for a Skills Development Matrix and provides a model training plan for Literacy and Numeracy support. The resource is written in Plain English and uses common units from the Transport and Distribution Training Package as exemplars.

Adult literacy and numeracy practices 2001: a national snapshot PDF Document  (824KB)
This study was undertaken in 2001 by TAFE NSW - Access Division with funding from DETYA. The project provides a snapshot of national adult literacy and numeracy provision showing the range and diversity of current practice and provision and an analysis of current best practice.

A kit that has been designed specifically for trainers working with Deaf or Non-English Speaking Background NESB (Non-English Speaking Background) learners undertaking the Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.
